Audition will consist of a cold reading.
LOST IN THE STARS takes place during 1940’s South African apartheid and tells the story of Stephen Kumalo, a local black preacher, coming to terms with the fact that his son Absalom killed a white man and during the course of the show, is sentenced to death. The show deals with issues of racial injustice, inequality and eventually reconciliation.
The principal roles (singing parts) are already cast as is most of the chorus. LOST IN THE STARS will run for two weekends August 17, 18, 24 and 25, 2018 and will have a 3-week rehearsal period beginning July 30th. Candidates must be available nights and weekends during that period and one or two of the larger parts may be called to limited daytime rehearsals during the first 2 weeks (particularly James Jarvis). Stipends are based upon number of lines and stage-time. There are 18 scenes and many of them of are very short, 2 minutes or less.
Rehearsal and Production Dates:
Rehearsal Period: July 30 – August 12 must be available nights and weekends
Dress Rehearsals: August 13, 14, 15 runs start at 8:00pm
Performances: August 17, 18, 24, 25 at 8:00pm
All rehearsal and performance dates should be considered mandatory.

SPEAKING ROLES – Description of Roles (in order of appearance):
Grace: Wife Stephen Kumalo and mother of the accused, played around the age 40
speaking lines in 2 scenes (1.1 and 1.2) – $800 Stipend
James Jarvis: Wealthy white landowner, 55 years old, the largest speaking role speaking lines in 3 scenes (1.2, 2.1, 2.5) – $1200 Stipend
Arthur Jarvis: Male, played around the age of 30, son of James Jarvis, is murdered speaking lines in 1 scene (1.2) – $800 Stipend
John Kumalo: Brother of Stephen Kumalo, played around the age of 35 speaking lines in 2 scenes (1.3, 2.1) – $1000 Stipend
Mark Eland: Parole officer, played around 30-35 years old speaking lines in 4 scenes (1.4, 1.7, 1.9, 1.11) – $1000 Stipend
Absalom Kumalo: Son of Stephen and Grace, the accused, played around the age of 20 something speaking lines in 3 scenes (1.6, 2.3, and 2.4) – $1000 Stipend
Matthew Kumalo: Son of John Kumalo, involved in the crime and trial with Absalom and Johannes a few speaking lines in 3 scenes (1.6, 1.8, 2.3) – $800 Stipend
Johannes Pafuri: Friend of Matthew and Absalom Kumalo, involved in the crime and trial a few speaking lines in 3 scenes (1.6, 1.8, 2.3) – $800 Stipend

Audition, Wednesday May 16, 4:30-5:30 PM
We are looking for 3 talented, mature early teens (age 10-15, approximately) for the following roles:
Nita: A young female villager in the hometown of Stephen Kumalo has about 5 speaking lines in the first scene of the show – $100 Stipend
Edward Jarvis: grandson of James Jarvis, son of Arthur Jarvis has lines in 2 scenes, fairly significant scene-work in one of them – $200 Stipend
Alex: Nephew of Stephen Kumalo a fairly large speaking part, also sings an important song (voice must be unchanged) would need to be available during the daytime and evenings – $300 Stipend
Audition, Tuesday May 15, 5:30-6:30 PM
Audition will consist of one song of your choosing, memorized. Pianist provided.
CHORUS – we are still looking for 4 chorus members for LOST IN THE STARS – there is a chorus of 24. The score stipulates a “white chorus” and a “black chorus” which most often sing together but have a few moments of just one or the other. These 4 roles are for the “black chorus” (1 alto, 2 tenors, 1 bass). In addition to the above-mentioned rehearsal schedule (nights and evenings), there are 3 mandatory musical rehearsals for the chorus: June 4, 7-10 pm, June 5, 8-10 pm and June 7 8-10 – $500 Stipend

Principal, Comprimario, and Chorus auditions are held annual in December/January for the upcoming festival season. Please check back in the fall [October] for more information regarding auditions dates.
Please note that UAO does not accept (or consider) audio submissions in lieu of a live audition. Additionally, UAO does not hear auditions outside of scheduled audition dates. No phone calls or emails please.
Managed artists must go through the same audition process as non-managed artists.
